Movember has been changing the face of men's health since 2003. Think of it this way: you and your friends are getting together this weekend - are you going to talk about your health? Research says that's unlikely, and it's more likely that you'll discuss sports, beards, or other interests instead. A Cleveland Clinic Survey reveals that 53% of men said that their health just isn't something they talk about.
Movember is a charity dedicated to using mustaches to raise awareness and start conversations around men's mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Big burly bearded men have mental/physical health issues, too- despite the silence, and we're here to talk about it.
What is Movember?
November represents more than football and turkey stuffing - it kicks off the conversation about men's health for charity. More specifically, Movember, which is a mix of M-ustache and N-ovember. Grow out your facial hair and support a good cause.
Continue growing facial hair or start now. Either way, donate and collect donations while sporting a brilliant beard and/or mustache. The proceeds go to research studies to better prevent tragedies associated with suicide, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Movember has funded over 1,250 men's health projects and research, reporting every initiative, so you know where your donations are going.
Every minute counts and men around the world need the support this charity provides. In the U.S alone, recent studies showed that men died by suicide 3.56x more often than women, 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 1 in 263 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer. Your support matters.
How Do I Get Involved?
Grow a Mustache
The first step is simple. Sign up and grow out your face!
There aren't restrictions on what facial hair you grow. It's up to you. The possibilities are limitless: grow mustaches like the Chevron, Dali, English, Fu Manchu, Handlebar, Petite Handlebar, Horseshoe, Pencil mustache, and beards like the Anchor, Brett, Chinstrap, Balbo, Garibaldi, Goatee, Old Dutch, Spade, full beard, and more.
Ever Heard of Yeards?
Every November, Movember sweeps the nation with beards and mustaches that'll keep you talking all year round. In fact, many men can't resist starting their yeards (a year's beard) during a movement that strongly encourages it in the 11th month of the year. You can grow your yeard from the 1st of November until December the following year, or you can do what most men do - make it a lifestyle change.
Studies show a steady rise in yeard trends as shaving products face an 11% decrease in the U.S men's market. More men are embracing their facial hair and making a difference while they do it.
For at least a year -
- Strict - Don't make any modifications to your facial hair.
- Lenient - You can trim, but don't make any changes to beard length.
Move for Movember
Sign up to run or walk 60km throughout November. Sixty men lose their life to suicide every hour worldwide. By committing to a walk or run of 60km, we pay tribute to those 60 men and work towards a better future for our fellow man.
Host a Mo-Ment
Get friends and family together to show off your facial hair and support a good cause.
Hang out together or virtually, have a good time, and raise awareness.
Mo Your Own Way
This step for getting involved is left up for interpretation. What works for one person may not work for others, so create a challenge that fits you. You can use this month to work out harder or quit a bad habit. Be the best you for November and donate to Movember.
Better yet, make a change for the year. Supporting men's health includes your own. We're all in this together.
